quiet frustration breaks the surface of his smile
causing ripples up and down his forehead

his eyes lay welded with layers of mudded thoughts

should he scream through the small cracks
of the tomb slowly enclosing his

or should he remain silent in wordless decay
?

as his neck strains in the midst of breakdown,
i intervene affectionately rushing head first into his pool of emotions.

i open my ears fully and fill them with his cries. in between sobs,
i stu-stutter
paranoid that the wrong words
would only drown him deeper still

his mind continues to overflow, drenching his face with
SEE water--

shifting from whimpers to wales
he pauses a moment to catch his breath

*INHALES*

as he hints at an encore of emotion vomits--

I INTERRUPT
with an unprecedented..

smile. =)

*EXHALES*

to the untrained eye, i have committed a horrible crime of apathy, BUT--

to the girl who has lived a life half-drowned in emotionally flooded rivers,
it is something MUCH more profound.

it is an invitation
for her love to step away from this shallow shell of his former self.

it is the warmest hand
clasping dearly onto the cold, dry fingers of her beloved.

at first, my smile conflicts with the chasm in his eyes,

but then,
i do the unthinkable..

i tell her a corny joke.

yes. a corny joke.

this primitive, unthoughtful, unpoetic, adolescent joke does not
fit in with our cinematic conversation of sorrows at all.

perhaps the great mozart, himself, would have rolled twice in his grave
if not for one small tidbit of objectivity:

"mozart don't know jazz."

jazz is displaced humor carefully woven into the layers of a sporadically knitted quilt
filled with dramatic ventilations.

it is a slow dance in the midst of a lil' jon music video.
and what a slow dance it is!

his face presses tightly against my shoulder
as I listen to the beating of his heart
of my deepest forms of affection. his feet move carefully with mine.

yes, irony at its finest.

given at the wrong time,
said the wrong way,
and delivered by the wrong fool,
a "corny" joke cannot and will not subside pain, but..

this is a rare case.

caught off guard by the sudden jolt of wry humor, he falls disarmed;
vulnerable to touch.

his pout bends hesitantly into a half smile--
then blossoms into a luminous pair of dimples.

his smile is my feast. it can last anywhere from three seconds
to three hours;

whatever the length,
it is a bountiful smorgasbord that satisfies even the loneliest of girls.

he chuckles for the first time in a soul's eternity,
and assembles for me the greatest architecture of words in the history of all mankind:

"thank you..... misstee."

three words.

three words whispered in substitution

of three others
he wholeheartedly intends to shout.

Believe it or not, cameras are dumb machines.

WITH YOU, they have the power to capture tears, laughter, joy,

death, LIFE, history in the making, and irreplaceable moments

FROZEN in time...

But WITHOUT YOU, they are nothing more than mindless paper

weights collecting dust on the top shelf of your bedroom closet.

* * *

In other words, YOU, as the photographer,

are what brings personality into a photo

By playing with COLOR, you are able to PAINT the mood of a

particular setting. By understanding the fragile relationship

between SHADOW & LIGHT, you are able to CHISEL and...

accentuate features onto your subjects' bodies.

As a photographer, what you CROP OUT,

is just as important as what you LEAVE IN

And what you place OUT of focus, is just as important

as what you choose to keep IN focus.

because...

Photography is not JUST about replicating reality.

photography is storytelling.

So the next time you choose to take a PORTRAIT

photo of your friends while barking orders like,

"Lift your chin." "Look at the sky." "Pout." "Smell my finger."

Or the next time you stand in the sidelines like a sniper

waiting for the perfect moment to snap a CANDID...

Remember that the photos you take say more about YOU

than they do about the subjects in your photographs. :)

I'm selfish, impatient, & a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, & at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

FALL RALLY NORTH

"Each time someone stands up for an idea, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope."
